Surgery

At Redgum, we are adept at most surgeries. Of course, there are more specialised surgeries which we feel are best undertaken by a specialist surgery or by someone specialised in that area of care. In these cases, we will refer you to either an emergency centre or specialist Vet clinic.

At Redgum, we like to make sure that you are kept fully informed at every stage of the process; we believe in being up front.

When your pet was booked for surgery, the nurse will have talked with you about a couple of things. One is pre-anaesthetic blood tests. Just like a human, it's important that we have a good awareness of your pet’s organ health before we introduce more drugs in the anaesthetic process. Generally, we will do a pre-anaesthetic profile (checking organ function), however, depending on the age of your pet, and other health issues, we might also ask for a wellness profile (a more comprehensive health check designed for senior and health compromised pets) and a pre-renal screening (to specifically check kidney function).
Each of these tests can be done prior to the surgery date.

The nurse will also have given you an estimate for the procedure.
And here’s the confusion – sometimes we can’t give you a tight estimate until we can have a really good look, and this sometimes requires sedation so we can see what is really going on. If there are changes from what you have been quoted, to what the Vet feels is necessary, we will phone you with a revised and educated price option for you.
What if it’s out of your budget?

Good question… and we have options!

VetPay, Zippay – you can apply for these on your phone
Not happening? We have other options… we can develop a staged dental plan, designed for your pet, with your budget in mind. Our nurses can talk you through this.

So, what happens on the surgery day?

So, what happens on the surgery day?

Generally, you will be advised to fast your pet (feed them the evening before surgery, and make sure that all food is picked up by midnight). Your pet can continue to have water.
You will be advised of an admission time a few days prior to the surgery, and any additional requirements can be discussed at that time.

Surgery cases are usually admitted between 8.30am and 9am. The surgery nurse will talk you through the admission process and will give you a better idea of the timing of the surgery. They will also communicate with you through the day, phoning you to advise of any changes, letting you know how the surgery went, and then organising a discharge time. At discharge, the nurse will talk you through any aftercare requirements, or medications, and will book revisits for suture removal or wound checking.

After the day
You will generally receive a phone call a day or so after the surgery, to check how your pet is recovering and if you have any queries or questions.
