Desexing and Microchipping

Did you know – in South Australia, all dogs and cats born after 1st July 2018 must be desexed before they are 6 months of age or within 28 days after the owner takes possession of the dog.

You can be granted an exemption - check out the dog and cat management board for details https://dogandcatboard.com.au/dogs/dog-laws

In South Australia, all dogs and cats must be microchipped before they are sold, or before they are 12 weeks of age, or within 28 days of an owner taking possession.

Microchips have a unique identification number which is connected to the owner’s contact details, and this lasts a lifetime. That’s why it’s important that you update your contact details if you change address or if the animal goes to a new home.

So, why desex?

So, why desex?

Desexing your pet means there will be less unwanted and homeless animals, however research also shows that desexed animals can actually live longer and healthier lives.

Desexing your pet can reduce the risks of some potentially serious health problems. For example, desexed pets are less likely to get mammary cancer and will not get uterine infections or have false pregnancies.

Desexing prevents reproductive cycle behaviours such as your female cat ‘calling’ when she is on heat/in season, yowling and crying, often at night. This can be very distressing, noisy, and unpleasant, particularly if your cat is in the house. Un-desexed female dogs will often bleed from their vulva when they are on heat/in season, while male dogs will often be very persistent in their attempts to get to females who are on heat/in season.

Desexed animals are generally less likely to roam; this reduces the risk of them being involved in a traumatic accident such as being hit by a car, getting into fights, and them being exposed to infectious disease through fighting.

Desexed animals are also less likely to show aggressive behaviour than un-desexed animals. This means they are less likely to fight with other animals in your household and the neighbourhood.

Desexed animals are less likely to scent mark by urinating on things, compared to un-desexed animals.

When you are thinking about desexing your pet, i9ts important to understand that there are differences between Veterinary clinics and how they approach any surgical procedure.

For example, at Redgum, we will discuss the value of pre-anaesthetic blood tests to ensure your pet’s system can process the drugs used in the anaesthetic.

We also make sure your pet has pain relief and antibiotics at the time of surgery, and fluid therapy to support the flushing of the drugs through the system.

All our animals wake up from surgery on the Accell therapy mat. This mat uses a cycloid vibration therapy (it’s a large vibrating mat; the animal is transferred to the mat from the surgery table) promoting healthy blood circulation, and muscle health, meaning your pet wakes up more comfortably and is able to recover much quicker from the surgical procedure.

At Redgum, we can generally offer desexing surgery on any weekday – just give us a call and we can talk you through the procedure and make that booking for you.
